Necessary vs. Sufficient

A door you must walk through is not the same as the room on the other side. A condition can be required for something to happen and still come nowhere close to making it happen. Mixing the two up is one of the quietest, most common errors in all of sports argument.

To board a flight you need a ticket. No ticket, no flight — the ticket is necessary. But owning a ticket does not put you on the plane. You can have a ticket and miss the gate, get bumped, sleep through the alarm. The ticket is required, not enough. Something that is enough on its own — the kind of thing where, if you have it, the outcome is guaranteed — is called sufficient.

Almost every "they qualify, so they'll win" argument is this mistake wearing a jersey. "This team is over .500, so they'll make the playoffs." Being over .500 is roughly necessary; it is nowhere near sufficient. "This pitcher throws 100, so he'll be an ace." Velocity is close to necessary for a modern ace; plenty of guys throw 100 and never command a thing.

Here is the tell. When someone says a team "checks the box," ask: is that the only box, or just one of them? A box you must check to be eligible is doing very different work from a box that, once checked, ends the conversation. Eligibility is not victory. The threshold is not the prize.

The sneaky part is that a necessary condition feels like evidence. It is technically true, it sounds impressive, and it points the right direction. But a fact engineered to mislead by leaving out the rest of the story is still misleading. "They cleared the bar" is true. "They're going to win" does not follow from it.

Tier 2 · If You Want to Go Deeper

Why the qualified field is so much bigger than the winners' circle.

Formally: a condition is necessary for an outcome if the outcome cannot occur without it — remove the condition and the outcome is impossible. A condition is sufficient if its presence guarantees the outcome — have the condition and the outcome must follow. Most real-world conditions are one or the other. Very few are both.

The reason this matters for sports is a counting argument. Necessary conditions define a field — everyone who could possibly win. Sufficient conditions would define the winner — and in any competitive league, there is essentially never a single sufficient condition, because if there were, the team that had it would win every year and the sport would die of boredom. So the honest analyst lives in the gap: a long list of necessary conditions, a qualified field of many, and a champion drawn from the top of that field by factors no single number captures.

This is why a threshold statistic — "a national champion needs a blue-chip ratio over fifty percent" — is so easy to abuse. The fifty-percent line is a real, historically validated necessary condition. But eighteen teams cleared it in 2025. The line tells you who bought a ticket. It does not tell you who is getting on the plane. When a stat defines the floor, the interesting question is never "did they clear it" — almost everyone in contention has. The interesting question is where they rank inside the qualified field, and what separates the top of that field from the merely eligible.

The corrective habit is one sentence long: when you hear a condition cited as proof, ask whether it's the kind that's required or the kind that's enough. If it is merely required, then the count matters — how many others also cleared it? — and the real story is hiding in the distance between the threshold and the prize.

Do this for a season and you will notice how much sports commentary is built on necessary conditions dressed as sufficient ones. The cure is not cynicism. It is the small, steady pleasure of knowing the difference between a door and the room behind it.
